MG TD TF 1500 - Off topic - Camaros [sorry, but advice needed]

Gentlemen:

I need some enthusiast thoughts, please. We're getting to the stage where our grown daughters show up at our mountain retirement home and I'm looking for a 'sporting' car that will serve as a family weekend air-conditioned ice-cream-getter but also provide some fun for me. I've found a neighbor's '95 Convertible Z28/6-speed with 170,000 kliks on the clock and no winters. New 18" tires and rims, all documentation from '98, adult owner. Now my daughters are good with a gearbox [one once turned 12.46 in my 383 stroker Chevelle on street tires] so I have no clutch worries [and, no, I won't let her near the TD] but I'm wondering about general overall GM/Camaro/Firebird problems. I realize it's now 18 years old and anything is possible, but any thoughts or experiences with the beasts - any general looming disasters that I should be aware of?

[I also have another neighbour's Supercharged MR2 on the line, but you've have trouble fitting three giggling women and their ice cream cones in that one.]

Ah, what silly problems we put ourselves into - sorry about the non-TD conversation...

If you like it, BUY IT! Reliable, tough and easy to work on. Typical GM poor fit and finish and inerior issues. Mechanically it is bullit proof.

Dave; Most common failures we see involve the Opti-spark ignition system. Supposed to be better in 95 but still see abrubt failures periodicly. Real pain to service distributor as well as plugs and ignition cables. Injection system works well-power and driveability generally good. fuel pump is a booger to change - keep the filter clean and level above 1/4 tank. Odd twists in clutch replacement so should the last owner have gotten all the good out of it - procede with caution.
Body seam in rear wheel well is prone to rust but easy to check.
Very few major engine or trans failures. Will go thru rear tires rapidly - till the new wears off. Dan
